Salt Cathedral In Wieliczka, Poland
By Mark Flippo
The Wieliczka Salt Mine located in the town of Wieliczka in southern Poland, lies within the Kraków metropolitan area. The mine, built in the 13th century, produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world's oldest salt mines still in operation. From its beginning and throughout its existence, the Royal mine was run by the Żupy krakowskie Salt Mines. Commercial mining was discontinued in 1996 due to low salt prices and mine flooding.
The men that worked in these mines, needed to believe in someone bigger who could help them in time of need! There was mine flooding and methane gas explosions on a regular basis! Many died trying to put food on their families table! They continued to carve out different scenes from the Bible to comfort themselves with!
Because those men chose to find comfort in a God that could keep them. This has grown to a place where so many come to learn about God! They says prayers here. They are encouraged here. I wonder if those men who were using their Faith had any idea that even after they stopped mining salt, it would continue on as a chapel? God has blessed because of the work of their hands and the Faith in their hearts!
