Foreign Flowers
By Mark Flippo
Lower left is an achlorophyllous plant native to southern Africa that is parasitic on the roots of members of the Euphorbiaceae family. The plant grows underground, except for a fleshy flower that emerges above ground and emits an odor of feces to attract its natural pollinators, dung beetles, and carrion beetles. The flowers act as traps for a brief period retaining the beetles that enter, then releasing them when the flower is fully opened. Lower right is the Dracunculus vulgaris. Upper Left is a photo of a Rafflesia arnoldii is one of the three national flowers in Indonesia, the other two being the white jasmine and moon orchid. The upper right I have no idea what it is. But it is interesting.
These are not your everyday put into an arrangement type of flowers! These rare beauties comes from photographers that have given their lives to get the best of the best we can possibly see. I have no desire to go into the jungle to experience these wonders. I will celebrate their accomplishments with them. God created them, you are only just taking a photo under difficult circumstances! If we could truly see into the mind of God we would be consumed by His power. No man can look straight into God's eyes! He is an all consuming fire!
