Oh God! His Arm Is Almost Torn Off
By Mark Flippo
I still very vividly remember when this happened. We were farmers. We lived just east of Des Moines, Iowa. My dad had been out in the fields harvesting corn. He came up towards the house, my sister and I were excited to see him, because he usually worked until dark. Here was our dad holding onto his right arm with his left hand. The corn picker had broken down and he had tried to fix it without turning it off. It caught his right sleeve near the elbow and dragged his arm through the gears. It was a mangled mess. When he got close enough for us to see, there was a thin layer of muscle holding that arm together. There was blood everywhere. It was so torn up my sister and I started crying and ran to get mom. She got him to the Des Moines General Hospital where they did surgery and stitched his arm back together the best they could. I do not remember how long he was in there for recovery and therapy, kids at that time were not allowed to go to any of the floors.
We waited in the first floor waiting room. When he was able to come home, his arm looked so gross. There were over 100 plus stitches and he was missing part of one of his fingers. It took a long time but he got a lot of use back in that arm! Praise God! He learned to play the steel guitar. What does this teach all of us? Even when we make mistakes, God is still with us. That corn picker gears could have destroyed more than just his arm. My father passed just a few years ago, and that happened about 1965. You may have consequences to your actions but God will help you through those times.
